If you are a serious movie buff, Vienna is certainly a city where you can indulge your passion
Although it is hardly remembered anymore, Vienna was once an important player in the movie business. Between the two world wars the legendary “Rosenhügel-Studios” were the centre of the Austrian film industry. Some of the movies made there became global hits and paved the way for the international careers of their leads – for example the later Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr.
Of course: Today Vienna isn’t a serious competitor of Hollywood anymore, but nevertheless it has remained a great place to go to the movies. While the city has its share of soulless multiplex theatres, there still are some pleasantly old-fashioned places. Among them is the “Austrian film museum”, located in the “Albertina”. Besides its scholarly work it also entertains a small theatre, where world cinema’s treasures and curiosities are screened. The ambitious programming covers motion pictures in all their manifestations and so provides a great in-depth education for everyone interested in the history and nature of this art form.
